A flight operated by American Airlines was diverted to Chicago last night (13 June) due to a suspicious item.

The US domestic flight 289, which was on its way from New York's John F Kennedy International Airport to Seattle, was diverted to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport at the request of the flight crew. According to the airline's spokeswoman Mary Francis Fagen, the 158 passengers and six crew members were evacuated when the aircraft landed. Chicago Aviation Department spokeswoman Kristen Cabanban said that the airport officials were asked to inspect something but she did not know what they found, The Guardian reported.

The Associated Press reported that no one was hurt and that the passengers were allowed to return to the aircraft and resume their journey after it had been searched.
