Sudan's state-owned airline Sudan Airways resumed flights to neighbouring Kenya for the first time in eight years on Wednesday (15 June), an airline official said.

The first flight from Khartoum to the Kenyan capital Nairobi after the US sanctions imposed on Sudan in 1997, follows a peace deal signed in January, which ended two decades of war in the south, reported Reuters.

The service to Nairobi is currently operated once a week, although the carrier said it may add a second weekly service in July. Sudan Airways also plans to resume services to Europe, possibly as early as in July, the carrier's deputy commercial director said.

In addition, Sudan Airways is beginning the process of privatisation, which is likely to be completed by the end of 2005, the deputy commercial director said.
