US carrier Hooters Air is being sued by three former students who claim that the company used a business plan that they created as a basis for launching the airline.

The former Southern Illinois University students were studying for bachelor degrees in aviation management in 1997 when they were given a project to develop a business plan for a commercial airline.

They claim that their plan detailed a Hooters airline which bears close resemblance to Hooters Air, including logos and the concept of employing scantily clad "Hooters Girls" to serve drinks during flights.

A spokesman for Hooters of America Inc said that the company's executives knew nothing about a class project and described the lawsuit as "factually inaccurate and nothing more than a publicity stunt".

The students are seeking an unspecified share of profits from the business, claiming that they should have received management jobs or a stake in the company, reports The Associated Press.
