The chief executive of Qantas Airways has said that the Australian carrier is likely to form some kind of association with another airline in five to 10 years' time.

Geoff Dixon said that an alliance with another carrier would probably become necessary, but declined to identify a likely partner. The CEO played down suggestions of a possible merger with Singapore Airlines, and said that a number of other airlines would also make a good partner, including British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Air New Zealand.

Dixon also said that Qantas had no immediate plans to follow other airlines in raising fuel surcharges.
