Malaysia has broken ground on the construction of an airport terminal for budget airlines.

Work on the facility at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), which is costing MYR108m, will start this month and take nine months to complete, officials said on Monday (6 June).

The cost to carriers at the budget airline terminal will be the same as at KLIA's main terminals, and the chief of AirAsia, the only budget carrier that has confirmed it will use the new facility, has called for lower charges, claiming that it is the only way for the hub to be successful.

The new terminal is likely to attract business from the many low-cost carriers in the region, said analysts quoted by AFP.
