Hilary Swank, an actress who won an Oscar for "Million Dollar Baby", is contesting a NZD200 fine from the New Zealand authorities for bringing fruit into the country.

The actress reportedly received the fine in January this year for failing to declare an apple and an orange that she was carrying in her baggage when she arrived at Auckland International Airport. According to William Minchin, a Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry spokesman, it is more or less standard practice to issue an instant fine for something classified as a bio-security risk, The Sunday Star-Times reported.

Thousands of visitors reportedly fail to declare fruit, which cannot be brought into New Zealand, every year and are fined immediately. Hundreds of these contest the fines, according to Minchin. The country adheres to strict quarantine guidelines as it is largely free from pests that cause damage to crops and livestock in other parts of the world.
