The European Commission revealed on Monday (14 March) that it intends to hold talks with Russia and China with the aim of opening their aviation markets.

The Commission plans to negotiate 'open skies' agreements with Russia and China in order to improve market opportunities for airlines and promote common security, safety and environmental standards, said the EU Transport Commissioner.

The European Union also plans to revive efforts to reach a new aviation agreement with the US. The talks on the subject, which began in 2003, have been stalled over European air carriers gaining access to US domestic routes and the opportunity for European firms to buy US airlines. The EU Transport Commissioner is to meet the US Transportation Secretary on 21 and 22 March in Washington.
