Survivors of a Russian aircraft crash used a satellite telephone to call the authorities after the aircraft crashed and caught fire earlier today (16 March).

The turboprop aircraft, which was reportedly carrying at least 52 people, crashed and caught fire when trying to land near an oil port along the Russian Arctic coast. Viktor Beltsov, spokesman for the Emergency Situations Ministry, said that there were 45 passengers and seven crew members aboard the Regional Airlines An-24 aircraft. Of those on board, 29 are thought to have been killed and ten of the 23 survivors were seriously injured.

The aircraft crashed near Varandei in the Nenets autonomous region, banking suddenly as it approached the airport. It had taken off from Ufa in southern Siberia, The Associated Press reported.
