The breakdown of a cargo aircraft at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, Peru saw the airport closed for almost seven hours on 15 March.
The cargo aircraft, an Antonov owned by the Peruvian cargo company Aero Transporte SA which was set to depart for a domestic flight, broke down during take-off and caused a blockage of the main runway at the airport.
CORPAC, the Peruvian airport authority, said that international flights, including services from Los Angeles and Miami in the US as well as from Brazil and Bolivia, were diverted to airports on the coast to the north and south of the capital and to Arequipa.
According to The Associated Press, the cargo aircraft suffered an unspecified mechanical failure.
