Pilots of the Cypriot national airline Cyprus Airways went on strike on Tuesday (1 March).

A total of 14 flights from Larnaca airport had to be cancelled because of the pilots' strike, affecting about 2,500 passengers, said an airline spokesperson.

The pilots decided to strike in sympathy with 22 senior flight stewards who received termination notices on Monday (28 February) as part of the airline's plan to cut costs.

Last week Cyprus Airways announced a loss of CYP36.9m for 2004 and said that it would have to lay off more than 100 employees.
