Taiwanese airlines launched regular flights to South Korea on Tuesday (1 March) following a 13-year break.

Taiwan reportedly banned South Korean aircraft from flying to the island in 1992, after Seoul cut diplomatic ties and recognized China instead.

In September 2004 Taiwan and South Korea signed a new aviation agreement which opened the way for the resumption of the flights.

Taiwan's China Airlines will fly between Taipei and Seoul, while Uni Air, a division of the Evergreen group, will operate services between the island's second city Kaohsiung and Seoul, reported The Associated Press.

China Airlines said that it would raise its number of flights from seven per week to nine at the end of March.
