It has been decided that military police are to guard valuable cargo at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands after the theft of an armoured truck.

Information about the decision was given by a military police spokesman, who also said that the number of detectives investigating the robbery had been increased from 20 to 40.

The thieves reportedly hijacked an armoured car carrying diamonds and jewellery from a cargo ramp of the Dutch airline KLM at Schiphol airport on Friday (25 February). The airline declined to comment on the value of the loss, although it was estimated at millions of euros, reported The Associated Press. The hijacking of the truck could apparently be the biggest ever diamond raid in the country. The Dutch media has said that jewellery worth about EUR75m was stolen.

The thieves, who were heavily armed, seized the vehicle after threatening the guards, said a source quoted by Reuters. No one was injured and the vehicle was later recovered.
