Russia has introduced new legislation to strengthen aviation security across the country.

The new law is reportedly designed to close loopholes that allowed suicide attackers to blow up two Russian passenger jets in August last year.

Among the measures included in the bill is an expanded role for the police at airports and onboard flights. Police officers will also be able to withhold luggage and cargo, and demand information and documentation from air carriers and airports.

In addition airlines will be obliged to transfer passengers' ticket data to police, reported The Associated Press.
