The caretaker management of Serbian national carrier JAT Airways issued an ultimatum on Tuesday (22 March) over what it claimed was an illegal walkout.

The strike of mechanical and engineering workers, which started on Thursday 17 March, has grounded all JAT flights and is costing the company an estimated EUR400,000 a day.

According to the ultimatum, employees who returned to work by noon local time on Wednesday (23 March) would face no consequences, while those who continued to strike would be suspended. The suspension could last up to three months and layoffs could follow.

The Serbian government has invited the mechanics' trade union for talks in the hope of resolving the latest in a series of strikes, reported The Associated Press.
