El Al posts Q4 loss

Israel's national carrier El Al Israel Airlines announced on Tuesday (29 March) its fourth quarter financial results.

El Al posted a net loss of USD25.9m in the quarter as compared to net profit of USD9.6m a year earlier. The carrier said that higher fuel prices, after hedging, added USD29m in expenses in the quarter. The company also recorded USD15m in one-time expenses for an early retirement plan for employees and deferred compensation. Revenues in the quarter were USD345.9m.

For the whole of 2004, the carrier's net profit increased 421% to USD33.1m and revenues rose 19% to USD1.4bn, with a 15% growth in the number of passengers and 17% increase in revenue from cargo.
