American Airlines has issued a statement saying that a media report indicating that the company outsourced 42% of its maintenance work in 2004 is misleading.

According to the airline, it has worked closely with the Transport Workers Union to keep the majority of its maintenance work in-house, as far as this can be done and still keep the airline competitive. The airline also said that the company does all of its heavy maintenance work and 80-90% of its total maintenance with American Airlines mechanics.
