Baggage handlers at Australia's Sydney Airport have participated in the smuggling of cocaine from South America, police said on Tuesday (10 May).

As part of a crackdown on the alleged drug ring police raided 15 homes in Sydney on Monday (9 May) and 11 people were arrested. More arrests are expected.

According to the police, cocaine with a value of millions of dollars was packed into suitcases in South America and sent on flights to Australia, where the suitcases were intercepted by baggage handlers involved in the smuggling operation.

The drug ring has been operating for some time, said a police spokesman.
