The consumption of jet fuel in the US is rising as airlines bring their older, less-efficient aircraft back into service to meet increasing travel demand.

According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA) demand for jet fuel in March was 1.6 million barrels per day, an increase of 3.5% over March 2004, and April estimates showed a 2.8% increase over 2004. In the past four weeks demand for kerosene-type jet fuel increased more than 4.1% to 1.64 million barrels per day compared to last year.

Many airlines that had taken old aircraft out of service when travel demand dropped following 11 September 2001 have probably returned these less-efficient aircraft into their active fleets, said an analyst with the EIA.
