Washington's Ronald Reagan National Airport is to re-open to charter and private aircraft.

Today (18 October) charter and private aircraft will be allowed to use the airport for the first time since 11 September 2001. The location of the airport is in Virginia, in the immediate vicinity of the Pentagon and close to the White House and the Capitol, Reuters reported.

Although private and charter aircraft will be allowed to use the airport, the security requirements will be strict, including one for an armed, government-approved security officer onboard the aircraft, Reuters reported.
