Spirit Airlines has been approved by the Cayman Islands Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to provide services to Grand Cayman.
The airline said that it was not ready to make a public announcement, but confirmed the news of the permission being granted. Spirit Airlines is based in Fort Lauderdale, USA and reportedly already operates services to the Bahamas, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos and Dominican Republic.
The airline's entry into the market is expected to increase the competition for struggling carrier Cayman Airways, reported caymannetnews.com.
