The British Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has published a guide to good practice for airline staff onboard aircraft.

The new publication, "CAP757 Occupational Health and Safety on-board Aircraft - Guidance on Good Practice", is expected to advise UK-based airlines on achieving compliance with the new European Civil Aviation (Working Time) Regulations.

The CAA has said that under the regulations employers must ensure that staff are provided with adequate health and safety protection and prevention and the publication has been developed in cooperation with the national airline industry and unions.

Common health and safety hazards covered in the publication reportedly include: manual handling, guidance on manoeuvring trolleys on-board aircraft; lifting baggage; opening and closing aircraft doors; burns and scalds in the aircraft cabin; and slips, trips and falls, including guidance on managing the risk of falls during turbulence and falling from an open aircraft exit.
