The European Commission wants tighter air security after reports of shortcomings in the US.

The Commission has reportedly proposed increased security after a report revealed that the air security in the United States was found to be lacking even after the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks. Under the proposals from the Commission, the 25 European Union member states would get common rules for handling cargo and in-flight security. The regulations would also allow EU inspectors to make sure that the standards are followed, The Associated Press reported.

The proposals suggested are however not entirely new, as they are part of 12 anti-terror measures that were proposed after the July bomb attacks in London, UK. European Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot said that the new regulations will allow faster and more effective responses to an ever-changing threat.
