Milan's Linate airport was part of Italy's first large-scale terror readiness drill on 23 September.

A total of about 1,500 police officers, firefighters and emergency workers took part in the drill that simulated attacks on a subway station and an airport, The Associated Press reported. The drill lasted about an hour and was set to test coordination and the ability to maintain order in the event of an attack.

The incident at the airport simulated the hijacking of a bus transporting travellers with a suspect taking shelter in the bus after attempting to deposit a bomb in a piece of baggage at the check-in.
