Indonesian officials have appealed for the return of all parts of the crashed Mandala Airlines aircraft that may have been removed.

The remains of the aircraft, which crashed just after take-off from the airport in the city of Medan, is being examined by US crash investigators. Indonesian officials have warned that the scavengers roaming around the crash site could be hindering the efforts to find out what happened to the 24-year-old Boeing 737-200.

Indonesia's transport minister Hatta Rajasa said that it may take up to several weeks to determine why the aircraft crashed. An engine problem has been suggested as a possible cause of the crash, but further investigations will be needed, The Associated Press reported.
