AirTran to equip aircraft with new automated external defibrillators

AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings Inc (NYSE: AAI), has said that it will become the first airline to equip its aircraft with the Philips HeartStart FRx, a new automated external defibrillator.

According to the airline, the defibrillator treats both children and adults who suffer sudden cardiac arrest. AirTran said it has purchased more than 45 HeartStart FRx Defibrillators, which will be installed on its Boeing 737 fleet.

The HeartStart FRx Defibrillator will be used to apply defibrillation therapy, or an electric shock, to the heart of a person suffering sudden cardiac arrest.
