European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas has said that the aviation industry should be included in the European Union's existing emissions trading system rather than becoming a new scheme as proposed by the European Parliament.
According to Reuters, Dimas said that the Commission's proposal will favour the existing emissions trading system for controlling greenhouse gas emissions by aviation.
In addition he stated that the Commission wants to see the sector included in the scheme during the 2008-2012 trading period, possibly around 2010.
