American Airlines, a subsidiary of AMR Corp (NYSE: AMR), has started installing new safety equipment designed to protect the centre fuel tanks of Boeing 757 aircraft.

With a kit designed by American Airlines and its partner, TDG Aerospace Inc, installation can be completed during an overnight maintenance check.

The equipment was reportedly developed by TDG Aerospace in conjunction with American Airlines, and is called the Universal Fault Interrupter, or UFI. The UFI is designed to protect the centre fuel tanks from electrical faults, extended dry-pump operation, and un-commanded pump operation, each of which is the subject of pending Special Federal Air Regulation 88.

Additionally, American Airlines said that the installation has Federal Aviation Administration Supplemental Type Certificate approval for the Boeing 757 and is an Alternate Method of Compliance (AMoC) to the fuel restrictions required by Airworthiness Directive 2002-24-51. It thus eliminates the requirement and the associated cost of carrying 1,000 pounds of additional fuel to guard against a potential spark and explosion.
