Communications solutions provider Nortel (NYSE:NT) (TSX:NT) has been selected by Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (MIAL) to build an IP communications network at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) in India, which will consolidate most of the airport's data, telephony and video systems onto a converged IP-based network.

Nortel said the CSIA network infrastructure will be based on its Metro Ethernet Network portfolio Optical Metro 5200 DWDM multi-service platform and Metro Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 platform with PBB and PBT solutions. It will also provide Enterprise Solutions such as Unified Communications and Nortel converged IP telephony solutions, including the Communication Server 1000 new release 5.0 and the Nortel Proactive Voice Quality Management (PVQM).

In addition, Nortel will provide its Enterprise Security, Application Switching and VPN solutions, from the company's Enterprise Data Networking offering. It will also provide Nortel's Ethernet Routing Switch 8600 platform with Nortel's Split Multi-Link Trunking (SMLT) technology to support secure always-on networking, with the airport's WiFi network to run on Nortel's WLAN solutions.

The wired and wireless infrastructure solution includes a new emergency notification system for public safety which, when completed, will provide network coverage throughout the airport terminal buildings and outside maintenance area. It is expected to increase productivity for airport operations and customer service personnel, simplify how users connect and communicate across the airport and help reduce cost of operations.
