American Airlines (NYSE: AMR) has announced that it is offering travellers the option to pay by electronic cheque when purchasing tickets on the airline's website, http://www.AA.com.

The airline said that customers who purchase tickets at AA.com will now be able to pay directly from any personal bank account that is funded in United States dollars.

To use the new feature customers must enter the bank routing and account numbers imprinted on the bottom of their paper cheque, as well as their address and driver's license or state-issued ID number. The information is then converted by First Data Corp's TeleCheck secure electronic cheque services into an electronic funds transfer entry, then processed through the bank-controlled automated clearing house.

The carrier said that electronic cheques can be used to pay for tickets for flights on American, American Eagle or AmericanConnection carriers, as well as for any AAdvantage award travel taxes and fees.
