First quarter results announced by AirTran Holdings Inc

AirTran Holdings Inc (NYSE:AAI), the parent company of AirTran Airways Inc, has announced its financial results for the first quarter of 2008.
The company reported a net loss of USD34.8m or USD0.38 per diluted share for the first quarter, as compared to net income of USD2.2m or USD0.02 per diluted share in the same quarter of the prior year.
First quarter traffic grew by 19.2% on a 10.8% increase in capacity, resulting in a first quarter load factor of 75.3%, a 5.2 point increase over 2007.
In addition revenues for the first quarter grew 18.3% to USD596.4m and passenger unit revenue increased by 6.9%.
The company said that during the first quarter the average price per gallon of fuel increased 49.3% to USD3.00, as compared to USD2.01 in the first quarter of 2007. Total fuel expense for the quarter was USD268m, an increase of USD102m from the prior year.
