Skybus ceases operations on 5 April and AirTran offers assistance to Skybus passengers
Airline Industry Information, April 7, 2008
AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
Skybus Airlines announced on 5 April that it was to cease all operations, with effect from 5 April 2008, due to its struggle to overcome rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment, following a decision made by the company's board of directors due to its financial condition.
The airline said it deeply regretted the impact its decision would have on employees and their families, customers, suppliers, vendors, airport officials and others in cities in which the company had operated.
According to Skybus Airlines, passengers holding reservations for Skybus flights due to depart on or after 5 April were to contact their credit card companies to arrange to apply for a refund. The company advised that all flights for 4 April were to be completed, with passengers to check in at a Skybus kiosk at the airport rather than via the Skybus website.
In addition, AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings Inc (NYSE:AAI), has announced a programme to help those passengers affected by Skybus Airlines's suspension of service, dependent on space availability on flights.
AirTran said passengers ticketed on Skybus can fly on standby status on AirTran for a one-way, refundable USD50 fare from 5 April 2008, with travel to be completed by 15 April, for the original Skybus dates. Charges, such as per-segment fees, security fees and the Airport Passenger Facility Charges, are not included, seats may not be available on all flights and passengers are advised to contact AirTran for assistance before 15 April.
