An American Airlines Boeing 757 was forced to return to Trinidad shortly after take off on 15 August and make an emergency landing back in Port-of-Spain.

According to the Associated Press, American Airlines said that the pilot detected a hydraulic problem and turned Flight 181 around to land back at Port-of-Spain without any reported injuries to the 188 passengers or seven crew members on board.

The aircraft was unable to taxi clear of the runway after landing as the fault caused the aircraft's wheel brakes to lock, forcing the authorities to close the airport for a time. Passengers were given hotel vouchers and re-booked on a Saturday flight while mechanics tried to determine the cause of the problem.
