On Saturday (23 August) a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 747 bound for Barbados returned to London Gatwick airport less than an hour after take-off to make a 'precautionary' landing.
The pilot of flight VS029 reported a technical difficulty and decided that the best course of action was to return to Gatwick for further examination.
A spokesman for BAA, which operates Gatwick, confirmed that all 320 passengers and the crew were unharmed by the incident.
According to the Telegraph, a Virgin spokesman denied earlier reports that an engine had caught fire.
