The European Commission is to investigate whether a joint business agreement between British Airways, American Airlines and Spain's Iberia is allowable under European Union competition rules.

The airlines are hoping to be granted worldwide antitrust immunity for their plan to cooperate on routes, schedules and fares for transatlantic flights.

The European Commission said that it had initiated the investigation, and it did not follow a particular complaint. However, the proposed link-up between British Airways and American Airlines is strongly opposed by Virgin Atlantic Airways.

European Union spokesman Jonathan Todd said on Friday (29 August) that the Commission's investigation "is not a merger investigation and has no specific deadline".
