The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) has confirmed that the blast on board a Qantas aircraft on 25 July was caused when an oxygen cylinder exploded.

One of 13 passenger oxygen system cylinders on board the Boeing 747-400 exploded during the flight from Hong Kong to Melbourne, and this blew a hole in the fuselage.

The incident caused a loss of cabin pressure at 29,000 feet and the crew were forced to make an emergency descent and divert the flight to the Philippines.

There were no injuries to the 365 passengers and crew members on board.

The cause of the explosion has yet to be established.

The ATSB said that its investigation of the incident is continuing and "is likely to take some months".
