The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents some 230 airlines around the world, has revealed that international passenger traffic fell by 4.6% in November.

This is a greater decrease than the 1.3% contraction in demand seen in October and the 2.9% fall in September.

International capacity was reduced by 1.0% and the November international passenger load factor was 72.7%, a decline of approximately 3 percentage points compared with November last year.

IATA's figures for November also show a decrease of 13.5% for international cargo. Giovanni Bisignani, IATA's director general and CEO, said that this is the largest drop since 2001, in the aftermath of the 11 September terrorist attacks.
