A contract to provide a new IP-based TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) digital radio system to Zaragoza Airport, Spain, to aid airport operations has been awarded to communications solutions provider Motorola Inc (NYSE:MOT) through local integrator Amper Sistemas SA.

Motorola said the contract was awarded to Amper Sistemas by Aeropuertos y Navegacion Aerea (Aena), a global operator of airport and air navigation services, with deployment of the new system, which will use Motorola's Dimetra IP Compact Solution, due for completion by July 2008.

The IP-based TETRA network, which is based on Motorola's ETSI TETRA compliant Dimetra IP system, will replace the airport's current analogue radio network. The company confirmed the system will provide 'always-on', secure mobile voice and data channels aimed at improving external and internal airport communication.

Motorola's TETRA system will provide high-quality service, helping airport operations to continue to run efficiently, 24/7, during 2008 World Expo which will be hosted by Zaragoza from 14 June to 14 September 2008.
