Mobile ground-based air units are now being used by Alaska Airlines for cabin venting, cooling and heating on parked aircraft at almost all of the carrier's gates at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
The company said that it is using the diesel-powered preconditioned air units, in conjunction with ground-based electrical power, to replace the use of an aircraft's on-board auxiliary power unit (APU), which operates on jet fuel.
In addition the airline has retrofitted all its Boeing 737s capable of using blended winglets.
The projects are reportedly part of the company's ongoing initiatives aimed at conserving fuel and reducing carbon emissions.
