Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp (NYSE:UTX), held its first Asia-Pacific Next Generation Technology Symposiums in Singapore and Beijing, China. At these conferences, the company's Geared Turbofan engine development was reviewed by over 180 representatives from airlines, leasing companies and aviation authorities from the Asia-Pacific region.
Pratt & Whitney aims for the Geared Turbofan to achieve double-digit reductions in fuel burn, engine noise, environmental emissions and operating costs.
The Geared Turbofan has a gear system that allows fans to operate at a different speed to the low-pressure compressor and turbine. Pratt & Whitney have stated that this will result in greater fuel efficiency and reduced noise through a slower fan speed.
The symposiums were co-hosted by Bombardier Aerospace and Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation. The airlines present were also given information about the Mitsubishi Regional Jet and CSeries aircraft programmes. Both of these are powered by the Geared Turbofan engine.
