British Airways' premium passengers to pay higher fuel surcharge

Airline Industry Information,  June 23, 2008

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

British Airways is reportedly planning to introduce different levels of fuel surcharge for different classes of travel.

The change will apply to the airline's passengers travelling in the first class, Club World and World Traveller Plus cabins, according to the BBC. On flights of more than nine hours British Airways' economy class passengers pay a fuel surcharge of GBP109 one-way, while World Traveller Plus customers will be charged GBP121 and those in Club World and first class will pay GBP133.

Similar price differences are already in effect at rival carrier Virgin Atlantic.

A spokesperson for British Airways said the move was "appropriate" because premium passengers have more cabin space and a higher baggage allowance.

In related news, British Airways World Cargo has announced an increase in its fuel surcharge with effect from 4 July. The new surcharge will be GBP0.81 or USD1.25 or EUR1.25.
