KLM Engineering & Maintenance has announced that, in conjunction with German paint supplier Mankiewicz, the company has developed a new aircraft painting system.
The company said that through the application of thinner paint layers the new system is able to reduce the weight of the paint by a 15%, meaning that the aircraft consumes less fuel and produces fewer CO2 emissions.
The paint is reportedly chromate-free and enables the aircraft to be degreased mainly using soap and water.
KLM E&M said that it performed extensive tests at the Mankiewicz laboratory, as well field trials and practical training.
The new system has already been deployed on a 747 freighter and three 737s.
