BAA, an airport authority, has selected Aruba Networks Inc (Nasdaq:ARUN) (Aruba), a provider of wireless LANs and secure unified mobility solutions, as its wireless LAN (WLAN) vendor and has deployed Aruba's wireless infrastructure throughout Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport, in the UK.

The secure wireless infrastructure was designed by Arup, BAA's design consultant for Terminal 5 communication infrastructure, to improve operational efficiency and support advanced mobile applications, ranging from baggage handling to retail outlets, throughout the facility.

BAA said it chose Aruba because it meet the company's security, resilience, flexibility and scalability requirements for large infrastructure deployments.

According to Aruba, it has provided hundreds of access points, supported by multiple Multi-Service Mobility Controllers operating in a highly resilient and redundant design. It claimed the secure WLAN infrastructure will support public Internet access, BAA's service offerings to organisations within Terminal 5 and British Airways' wireless lounge Internet access.

Arup confirmed Aruba was able to provide the deep packet inspection firewall, central management and overall flexibility needed, without loss to security. BAA deployed an Aruba WLAN for its advanced baggage handling system, allowing engineers with PDAs and laptops to manage system commissioning from anywhere in the facility.
