Mid-air collision averted in the US

Airline Industry Information,  March 6, 2008

AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2008 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

A mid-air collision involving two aircraft was avoided in the US on Tuesday (4 March).

The flights involved in the incident were Delta Flight 1654 on its way from Cincinnati to New York's LaGuardia International Airport and PSA Flight 2273 en-route from Wilkes-Barre, Pa., to Charlotte, N.C.

The incident, which occurred east of Pittsburgh, took place when a trainee air traffic controller reportedly advised the pilot of the Delta flight to turn into the path of the oncoming PSA fight.

The Federal Aviation Administration stated that a nosedive was made by the Delta pilot enabling him to miss the PSA aircraft, which also took evasive action, by approximately 400 feet, The Associated Press reported.

The Delta flight was carrying 57 passengers, whilst the PSA flight had 70 people on board.
