The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) has welcomed a new ruling in the US which requires airlines to allow patients suffering from respiratory illnesses to take on board approved portable oxygen concentrators.
Patients must still give the airline advance notice and a medical certificate stating that the use of medical oxygen is needed.
The ruling from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) amends the Air Carrier Access Act. This law prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in air travel, but did not specifically address the needs of medical oxygen users.

The AARC lobbied for the nationwide ruling in conjunction with the Airline Oxygen Council of America, Alpha-1 Foundation and the US COPD Coalition.
The amendment confirms that passenger-owned electronic equipment which assists breathing, such as portable oxygen concentrators, must be allowed on board.
The rule will apply to US airlines worldwide and foreign airlines operating flights that start or end in the United States. It will take effect officially in one year's time.
