US aircraft manufacturer Boeing Co (NYSE: BA) is supporting a competition for college students in the United States and China.

The 2008 Boeing Shanghai Challenge, which is being run by Boeing in association with Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services, Tsinghua University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, invites students from selected universities to design "more environmentally progressive ways of operating an aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility".

Teams of up to three university students and one faculty adviser can prepare "green" concepts for the Boeing Shanghai Aviation Services MRO operation. Entries will be judged on the creativity of the solution, technical feasibility, depth and completeness of technical analysis, and clarity of presentation.

The deadline for entries is 1 June and five finalist teams will be announced on 15 June. These will meet in Beijing on 9 July to give their final presentations, and prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.

The challenge is sponsored by Boeing and the Research Center for Logistics and Economic Development, a joint effort of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Tsinghua University.
