An Internet Protocol (IP) network from network solutions provider Cisco Systems (Nasdaq:CSCO) (Cisco) has been implemented by ROMATSA, the Romanian Administration for Air Traffic Services, to support air traffic control services and help it create a safe operational environment for air traffic in the Romanian airspace.

ROMATSA sought to replace its legacy systems with a flexible IP-based infrastructure to serve all areas of radio, voice and data communications, data processing, navigation and surveillance. The Cisco software and hardware solution needed to address interoperability with multiple legacy protocols and interfaces from third party equipment, with the solution customised, designed and implemented by Cisco Gold Certified Partner Datanet Systems.

Cisco said the network serves as the platform for all air traffic control communication, including air-to-ground and ground-to-ground communication and all data transfers for aeronautical applications and helps ROMATSA reduce operating costs and meet resiliency and redundancy requirements.

The deployment is based on various solutions, including Cisco Catalyst 7600 Series routers, which provide a high-performance core network solution and associated firewall and intrusion detection and prevention security features.

Cisco's 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers offer an access solution, with the CiscoWorks LAN Management Solution and the Cisco Security Monitoring, Analysis and Response System (MARS) providing network management. The company has also provided its Unified Call Manager solution and over 300 Cisco IP Phones.
