The Air Transport Association of America (ATA), an industry trade organisation which represents US airlines, has said that it welcomes the statement from the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) regarding the plans to auction slots at New York's John F. Kennedy and Newark Liberty airports.

According to ATA the GAO said that the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not have the legal authority to auction slots.

Such auctions may be in violation of the Antideficiency Act and other statutory prohibitions, it was claimed.

ATA and its airline members "applaud the clear and decisive opinion rendered by the GAO", said ATA president and CEO James C. May.
