Goodrich Corporation (NYSE:GR), a supplier of systems and services to the aerospace and defence industry, has been given FAA Supplemental Type Certification (STC) for its lightweight and durable fan cowl design, for V2500-A5 engine nacelles.

A one-piece fan cowl will be supplied by the company's Aerostructures business unit, through its Alabama Service Center in Foley, Alabama, as an element of its Prime Solutions aftermarket support programme.

Goodrich have worked with Bombardier Aerospace of Belfast in Northern Ireland to develop the monolithic fan cowl, which uses a resin transfer infusion process, replacing the fan cowl's usual honeycomb interior with a monolithic structure. The company claim that this lowers repair costs as the one-piece components are more robust than previous designs.

Additionally, on-wing maintenance time will be reduced with the new Integrated Drive Generator (IDG) oil servicing access door, as the fan cowls will not have to be opened during servicing of the IDG.
