Avery Weigh-Tronix has announced that 26 of its new pre-check-in baggage weighing systems have been deployed at Virgin Atlantic's new facility in terminal 3 of London's Heathrow Airport.

Virgin's new 'zone A' check-in area enables passengers to use a kiosk where Avery Weigh-Tronix has installed its pre-check-in baggage weighing system. This has almost halved the average time spent dropping off luggage, resulting in shorter queues, the company claims.

The airline said that it has achieved its goal of 80% of economy passengers checking-in using a kiosk, or through the Internet, well before its December 2008 target date.

Avery Weigh-Tronix will also provide ongoing service and maintenance for the 26 systems. This contract covers calibration along with pre-planned and emergency maintenance and repair.
