The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents some 230 airlines around the world, has criticised the European Council of Justice and European Union home affairs ministers for approving the decision to widen the European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to include air transportation.

Airlines will be included in the ETS from 2012.

IATA's director general and CEO Giovanni Bisignani said that the organisation does not oppose emissions trading but believes that, in conjunction with economic measures, improvements must be made to efficiency with technology, operations and infrastructure.

Bisignani also called for the introduction of "an effective Single European Sky" which he said would save billions of euros as well as 16 million tonnes of CO2 annually.
